Universe+PlayOn on PC

I now have Universe giving us (with thanks from Lucille84) PlayOn/Netflix/Hulu/etc on our eGreat M34A clients - thanks completely to Martin's unselfish support in resolving various issues. This has completely tranformed our TV viewing -- thanks ever so much for this great plugin.

Occassionally I attempt to access PlayOn via Universe on the nPVR PC but no joy. It gives "Waiting" message, then "Buffered nnnn" message, then reverts back to menu.

Is Universe/PlayOn intended to be usable on the PC as well as the NMT?

Yes it works quite well on the PC, in fact I was testing the new additions today and the new OWN shows were even available in Canada too, which is rare. After the buffered message it tries to open a socket to the UPnP server. If you made your firewall rules restrictive, the domain, it is possible that you are blocking 127.0.0.1

Martin, thanks for answering,
You might remember that I changed forewall from ZoneAlarm to Windows (Win7 Home Premium) Firewall.
To get PlayOn working on the NMT's I simply added a 'rule' (via Advanced Security) for 'Any for Endpoint 1' and the range you recommended '192.168.2.0 - 192.168.2.255 for Endpoint 2' and the rule being 'Do not authenticate' for 'ANy Port' and 'Any Protocol'. Also, the specific programs: NextPVR, NRecord, MediaMallServer, and Playon were set as explicit rules as well.

From your message above, I have just added a second rule for 127.0.0.1 (for endpoint 2) - but this did not give a completed connection for PlayOn as far as I can see. I get no notifications from Windows Firewall (though it is set to notify when a program is blocked).

How/where do I uncover whether I have "made your firewall rules restrictive, the domain, it is possible that you are blocking 127.0.0.1" ???

Yes I remembered you firewall, I was thinking it was somehow possible you had somehow blocked 127.0.0.1

Can you play mpeg files in general with your PC setup? If not maybe try different decoders. Everyone has their favourites, I haven't tried SAF because I don't like using secret handshakes to install software, but it is discussed regularly here. I personally have had good results with K-Lite http://www.codecguide.com/about_kl.htm and the basic pack is all you need for mpeg playback.

When you say 'mpeg files' are you using that term generically (meaning .mpeg and .mpg file extensions)?

Do your encoder remarks mean that Universe/PlayOn is delivering .mpeg format content?

nPVR plays all our old (previously recorded via pvr150, hvr-1600 analog) .mpg files just fine.

I have a .mpeg file to use for testing - it is not very high quality to begin with, but... it does start under nPVR/Videos but plays with LOTS of pixellation.. it does play okay under VLC Player (no pixellation)

Sorry for not spelling it out, I sometimes correct others to. I do mean mpeg-ps (program stream) files that are usually .mpg/.mpeg Universe doesn't do anything to the content, but PlayOn does send .mpg

I really need your logs to take this further.

I have had exactly the same problem. 90% of the time I'm watching from the PCH and all's great but from the computer... "Buffering..." comes up for a while and then it returns without playing...

I turned off windows firewall,,, works fine. I play .mpg files with VLC player, works fine.

That definitely looks like you need better mpeg processing in NextPVR, the graph is wrong,

I would suggest the same thing, try K-Lite basic or some other codec pack. You can do it manually you probably need an mpeg splitter to start.

Thanks for the amazing responsiveness... I have Haali Media Splitter installed... do I need to uninstall that first before installing K lite?
