Windows Home Server

Hi,

Has anyone else here signed up for the public beta of Windows Home Server. It looks like a really interesting product, especially the expandable storage and redundancy features. My only worry is that i won't be able to run my own apps on it, such as GBPVR, Ninan and SQL Server.

Well, if i don't get accepted into the beta and someone else here does, i'd be very interested to know how you get on with it.

I signed up for it as well. I currently have a Windows 2000 Server, where I've put my media files. If I get into the beta, it'll be interesting to compare the two-- especially w/re the maintenance required of the 2000 Server OS. Of course most of the maintenance there is due to IIS.

I don't expect it to replace my current server, as it's primarily used for business, but it'll let me move media from the business server to a home server.

Thanks for the heads up; I just signed up for the beta as well. I'm looking forward to see if Microsoft lives up to its claims of a simple backup solution.

I joined the "windows home server" beta too! want to know too if gbpvr and all stuff will work on the server edition! I think i'll give it a try this week as soon as i have a nice new big harddisk to backup all the stuff since the installation of the server edition wipes out all harddisks on setup....

Yes! My test-computer is running home server for about 2 days now. I'm gathering info about the next step now: ... gbpvr.... I hope to combine the server part and the gbpvr part in one computer. now windows xp runs the gbpvr computer but server sounds more save? and saves energy..

Jan, did you combine them? If so, any issues with doing so?

I'm pleased to report that I've just received a beta 2 invitation email. I'm wondering how much alteration will GBPVR require to use the new storage model and permissions system.

I have Windows Home Server running with GBPVR installed. Everything seems to work ok now. There were 2 problems I found:
1. Live TV and watching a program beiing recorded didn''t work. The whole systems locked. Workaround: at first the recordings were stored in \\shared\videos. Now i moved them to another physical harddisk "E" in my system.
2. GBPVR displayed the wrong time/date-format. WHS is englis and I set the local settings in the control panel to Netherlands. But GBPVR kept using the wrong format. I found another location in the register with default settings. After changing these manually to the correct Netherlands settings everthing worked perfect.
I use XMLTV for EPG grabbing. This program works too!
Another nice feature: you don't need to logon when booting the system. WHS shows the logon-screen and gbpvr and everything works too!
