One of the 80mm fans has died completely, the other rattles and the 120mm fan sounds like an asthmatic gorilla when it's being ramped up from slow to high speed when things get too hot.

Any recommendations for makes/models of possible replacements would be gratefully received. As quiet as possible would be nice. :)

I did some forum searches and found answers to some/most of my questions but I am still a bit unclear about a few things and many of the threads are quite old.

Before I buy one I had a couple questions for those with experience using this solution (XBMC + NPVR + HDHR Prime):

Is this guide still accurate as to how to set up the HDHR Prime with NPVR?

Do I attach it to my primary HTPC via USB or Network?

Are there any issues with the performance? I get the feeling that using a network stream or DLNA (or however NPVR integrates with the device) might be slow or cumbersome, especially when it comes to channel switching.

What are the advantages to using a dedicated backend such as NPVR with the HDHR as opposed to the "native" XBMC integration (which seems sloppy)?

Any overall impressions or sources of frustration?

I've had it with cable and have finally decided to bail-out. From my research I believe an XBMC front with NextPVR backend will deliver what I need with a minimum of wrath from wife and kids. I was hoping the community could look over my thoughts below and advise where appropriate, particularly around the tuners, processor and video card.

This post is all about the NextPVR backend system

My personal requirements:
  • XBMC front-end
  • NextPVR back-end
  • Separate front/back -end systems
  • US OTA digital broadcasts
  • Watch 1 Live TV stream (w/ record/pause etc.) & simultaneously record another station.
  • 1080p is preferred but not hard requirement (best broadcast in area is 1080i)
  • Avoid pointless complexity


Tuner card / device decision
  • Silicondust HDHomeRun Dual -- But, would this make the XBMC front-end more complicated to control?
  • Hauppauge (HopHog??) WinTV-HVR-2250 -- Looks like this is the only one with 2 digital tuners that would meet my dual watch/record requirement. Would it be better to get 2x single tuner boards though? Any reason to favor this over the Silcondust route?
  • Others I may have overlooked??? One down side options above support max of 1080i. So, if another source were to come along with 1080p I would need to upgrade to take advantage.

OS
  • Assume this should be Win7 x64? Any advantage to Win8 in terms of codecs maybe?

Processor decision
  • HVR2250 requires minimum P4- 2.2Ghz
  • Silicon Dust requires minimum of dual core
  • NextPVR min is P4 1.4Ghz
  • Miminums scare me -- what would community recommend based on my goals? I'm guessing Duo or X2 would cover?

Video Card
  • The tuners don't list requirements
  • NextPVR says 'a modern video card' ...well alrighty then
  • Does vid card even matter for a backend? Or can I just grab a mobo with basic built-in capability?

I noticed that NPVR system requirements page says, "A more powerful computer (with a faster CPU and better graphics card) is required for playback of high-definition (HD) content. Does anyone have a feel for if my problem is due to hardware that isn't powerful enough? Is it the tuner, the cablecard, the fact that I had the two tuner DCR-2650 previously? The device settings sees all three, and shows them as DCR-2650/HDHR Prime, is this normal? I did uninstall and reinstall the drivers. WMC also gets no signal with that tuner.

Any ideas? Or shall I head on over to SiliconDust for help?

Second thing is IF I got one I would have to ditch the now quite old PCI Hauppauge PVR 150, for a USB version that I can connect my cable box inputs to. Any recommendations, I prefer Hauppauge, with analogue inputs?

But with the always on state, I've had a lot of problems with it disconnecting, remote suddenly not working, basically many of the problems I've seen reported around the internet. I even sent it back to Hauppauge and got a replacement, but it exhibits the same behavior.

So I'm thinking of switching to the Silicondust HDHomeRun Prime, and I was wondering if it suffers from any of the same problems, or if it is more reliable than the Hauppauge. I'd need to get a receiver for my remote, I guess, but it would be worthwhile if I could rely more on the tuners working.

Any info or opinions would be appreciated. I did find the Android OS and various Android builds of XBMC not quite up to task for HD content, but after installing a specific Linux XBMC-only build firmware on the box, I can say it is fully functional, for less than $100 total. Has wifi and ethernet, and a usable ir remote with xbmc-specific buttons.

New builds are coming out all the time, and the Android and Linux builds are still beta, but very useable so far.
