View Full Version : Universe+PlayOn on PC

I now have Universe giving us (with thanks from Lucille84) PlayOn/Netflix/Hulu/etc on our eGreat M34A clients - thanks completely to Martin's unselfish support in resolving various issues. This has completely tranformed our TV viewing -- thanks ever so much for this great plugin.

Occassionally I attempt to access PlayOn via Universe on the nPVR PC but no joy. It gives "Waiting" message, then "Buffered nnnn" message, then reverts back to menu.

Is Universe/PlayOn intended to be usable on the PC as well as the NMT?

Thanks,

mvallevand

Yes it works quite well on the PC, in fact I was testing the new additions today and the new OWN shows were even available in Canada too, which is rare. After the buffered message it tries to open a socket to the UPnP server. If you made your firewall rules restrictive, the domain, it is possible that you are blocking 127.0.0.1

Martin, thanks for answering,
You might remember that I changed forewall from ZoneAlarm to Windows (Win7 Home Premium) Firewall.
To get PlayOn working on the NMT's I simply added a 'rule' (via Advanced Security) for 'Any for Endpoint 1' and the range you recommended '192.168.2.0 - 192.168.2.255 for Endpoint 2' and the rule being 'Do not authenticate' for 'ANy Port' and 'Any Protocol'. Also, the specific programs: NextPVR, NRecord, MediaMallServer, and Playon were set as explicit rules as well.

From your message above, I have just added a second rule for 127.0.0.1 (for endpoint 2) - but this did not give a completed connection for PlayOn as far as I can see. I get no notifications from Windows Firewall (though it is set to notify when a program is blocked).

How/where do I uncover whether I have "made your firewall rules restrictive, the domain, it is possible that you are blocking 127.0.0.1" ???

Thanks,

mvallevand

Yes I remembered you firewall, I was thinking it was somehow possible you had somehow blocked 127.0.0.1

Can you play mpeg files in general with your PC setup? If not maybe try different decoders. Everyone has their favourites, I haven't tried SAF because I don't like using secret handshakes to install software, but it is discussed regularly here. I personally have had good results with K-Lite http://www.codecguide.com/about_kl.htm and the basic pack is all you need for mpeg playback.

Hi Martin

When you say 'mpeg files' are you using that term generically (meaning .mpeg and .mpg file extensions)?

Do your encoder remarks mean that Universe/PlayOn is delivering .mpeg format content?

nPVR plays all our old (previously recorded via pvr150, hvr-1600 analog) .mpg files just fine.

I have a .mpeg file to use for testing - it is not very high quality to begin with, but... it does start under nPVR/Videos but plays with LOTS of pixellation.. it does play okay under VLC Player (no pixellation)

Sorry for not spelling it out, I sometimes correct others to. I do mean mpeg-ps (program stream) files that are usually .mpg/.mpeg Universe doesn't do anything to the content, but PlayOn does send .mpg

I really need your logs to take this further.

Martin,

I have had exactly the same problem. 90% of the time I'm watching from the PCH and all's great but from the computer... "Buffering..." comes up for a while and then it returns without playing...

I turned off windows firewall,,, works fine. I play .mpg files with VLC player, works fine.

Logs attached.

That definitely looks like you need better mpeg processing in NextPVR, the graph is wrong,

I would suggest the same thing, try K-Lite basic or some other codec pack. You can do it manually you probably need an mpeg splitter to start.

Thanks for the amazing responsiveness... I have Haali Media Splitter installed... do I need to uninstall that first before installing K lite?

Its might ask to remove the Haali splitter which it doesn't like, so you probably will end up with the Gabest splitter.

Martin,

I just followed instructions, it took out many of my decoders including Haali, ffdshow and others... I installed the full version, didn't change my NPVR settings... and...

everything seems to work (amazingly enough)

I tried... .m4v (Apple tv format), .mpg, .avi. mkv (HD and not) and all is good. Universe works, TV works.

Thanks !

Just getting back to this.
And after upgrading to 2.2.6, then upgrading PlayOn had the same as previous (hang on buffering) no go on the PC

From this thread I tried thew K-Lite Basic (latest release) and now the Universe/PlayOn/Hulu content works on the PC (WIn7)!!!

But... Universe/PlayOn/Hulu NOT working on NMT clients (sorry, hadn't tested if it was working before K-Lite was upgraded :( )
...meaning that when a show/item is selected from the Hulu memu there's a slight (2/4 secs) delay then what looks like a screen refesh - then the list of shows is back.

Any ideas on where to start??

I can't get Hulu here but Netflix.ca is partially working (something seems off at the server) abd I just tried with Vevo and they areb working on the NMT. You only sent the NPVR log though, could you zip the contents of the whole folder and I will see if I see anything.

You do have to remember to allow PlayOn through your firewall and also you would need to be using a version of mvpmcx2 that supported http streaming

Martin thanks for the reply,

I just double checked that PlayOn was allowed through the firewall - looks okay.

? might there also be a user/permissions issue ?

Universe/PlayOn was previously working just fine on my NMT's (thanks to you).

If you think it's worth it, I'll reinstall mvpmcx2 ???

Martin,
Should I be posting this somewhere for Sub to find? Where would be best for that?

As a matter to better my understanding... what would be different for nPVR in trying to do this on the NMT versus on the PC (where it is working okay) ?

Thanks for your efforts,

I actually don't know what it takes to get sub's attention in the sub forums. I am most worried that NPVR thinks it is is end of stream

I think sub needs to look at this. It looks like NPVR is trying to read the dummy file as a mpeg file. As far as I can tell, it's receiving requests from mvpmcx2 to read from the currently option file, so it is. I thought you went direct to a http source from mvpmcx2, and only opened a dummy file to convince nextpvr that it was playing something (but wouldnt read from it)?

This plugin is what is going to get me to switch from GBPVR to nPVR... it looks to be awesome. I'm presently using a clunky HP x280n Mediasmart extender for Playon, but would love to get rid of it. Anyway, I've set up nPVR on a laptop to see how this plugin works. I can play mpeg files fine from within nPVR, but Universe weirdly only loads evr renderer, and default directsound for the graph. I find the server, select a source, some buffering occurs, then I'm kicked back to the menu.

Thanks for any help, George

When I see a line like

2011-10-03 14:42:22.635 [DEBUG][1] Source Aspect Ratio: 1x1

it usually means that you don't have an mpeg splitter installed. I recommend the Haali splitter.

Weird. I did have Haali installed. Uninstalled, reinstalled the most recent version, ticked off that it should split everything, same result. Here's the graph for an mpeg file. I don't see the Haali icon in the tray, but in any case the file plays fine... I'm stumped.... Thanks, George

The graph for this is stream is slightly different though, because it must support http streaming. Perhaps you have a firewall blocking access. Also earlier in this thread I recommended the K-Lite codec pack to correct a similar problem, and I stand with that recommendation. The basic pack is fine.

I do have a couple of questions after playing around with this plugin. It's way faster, and more responsive, than the HP x280n box I have been using. And I don't see the jerkiness from panning... anyway, (1) the timeline at the bottom of the screen always shows 0 on the left and right, with no progress bar (2) I guess there isn't any way to fast forward that I could see.

Thanks, George

With PlayOn on any device, you can't navigate forward past what has been streamed. From the PlayOn FAQ "so it's impossible to fast forward beyond the latest downloaded (and transcoded) point in the media"

Ultimately both your questions are for sub. He probably could provide an elapsed time mechanism similar to LiveTV but I am not sure if he can provide some http navigation for seeking in a the transcoded part of the file.

Martin/Sub,
Just to close the loop on this...
I resorted to a FULL reinstall based on using NMTInstall2 - meaning all boxes checked: mvpmcx2, NPVR, Skins, NMT
That resolved the problem with Universe/Playon hanging at buffering on my NMT's (M34a's)
FWIW, recalling the previous upgrade to 2.2.6 that started this problem... I am nearly positive that the upgrade using NMTInstall2 was done by ONLY checking the NPVR upgrade box (not a FULL install).
Thanks for all you guys do to help us all,

I am in process of configuring Universe plug in with Playon. As previously reviewed in this thread, I am facing same issues regarding to no streaming media playback.

I have not looked into the Win7-64 firewall yet. Am running a standalone htpc, and hope to integrate the Roku box in the bedroom.

Downloaded the Haali splitter. Am on the options page now and figured I had better ask questions before proceeding.

Which K-Lite Codec pack should I get? Any advantage to the system in also getting the 64 bit codecs?

I have messed around with many different decoders, and am currently using the following:

32955

This is the best configuration I have come up with so far. When installing the KLite package which options would be best? I am still experiencing some latency in ff/pause issues but much better.

What those don't show is the mpeg splitter required for http mpeg-ps playback. If you install K-Lite standard it will install either the Haali or LAV splitter for you. It is SD so you shouldn't have too much issues, allow you won't necessary have FF/RW because it is transcoded on the fly.

64 bit decoders will be of no use to you with NextPVR. NextPVR is 32 bit so it will only use 32 bit decoders regardless of OS version.

Grampz

Thanks guys..

figured that on the 64 bit decoders, but needed to ask...

I installed the basic KLite package earlier, which removed the prior install of the Haali filter. I just installed the standard package which I assume installed the Haali filter in viewing the setup defaults. Also, installation of the basic package done earlier cleaned up the registry according to dialog boxes that popped up.

The Universe interface is very slow relating to either keyboard, mouse, or remote commands. Pandora plays well but the screen that shows is very fuzzy and non useable (may be the way it works). I can go back and change stations, etc.. via the Universe interface. Streaming playback is very choppy and unusable. I am unable to use ffdshow, nor Lav as decoder options with Live TV, Recordings, since they both show no video. They play audio, and show information on the selection. Lav works with the Universe interface, but still choppy with intermittent audio...

Martin, you mentioned a while back that you feel my system is underpowered. I assume that through the plug in on the htpc, and via Roku that all streaming content is transcoded on the fly. When playing streaming content via the plug in cpu useage is pegging at 100%, windows running 64 proccesses, using half of the ram, the MedialMall process is averaging 70% cpu usage and jumps up and down wildly. You have guided me immensely but something just isn't right especially after upgrades, fresh os and npvr install..

I have an AMD Athlon 64 3400+ cpu, 3gb ddr ram, Win 7-64, .5tb SATA hd, 600 watt power supply, nvidia geforce 210 (Rocketfish, Best Buy brand) video card, Rocketfish 7.1 PCI sound card (using Creative Lab's X-Fi chipset).

I am so frustrated and thanks again!

I will leave Martin to comment on universe etc as I have no experience of it but I do know that the 3400+ cpu is amongst the lowest of the "Low Mid Range CPUs"
It is only a bit faster than the Athlon XP 3200 cpu that I stopped using over 5 years ago. I know MS say that win7 only needs a 1Ghz CPU but tbh I am surprised it runs win7 AND applications acceptably at all.

The Universe interface is very slow relating to either keyboard, mouse, or remote commands.

I made a recent post http://forums.gbpvr.com/showthread.php?51633-Yet-Another-YouTube-Video&p=430815#post430815 showing it on the NMT which should be noticeably slower reacting than the PC (except for the minute delay which will be the same) PlayOn does include a system check in their setting program.

Pandora plays well but the screen that shows is very fuzzy and non useable (may be the way it works).

I don't know what the screen is supposed to show, I am writing from Canada, and it is blocked.

Scary news for SD content.

I am unable to use ffdshow, nor Lav as decoder options with Live TV, Recordings, since they both show no video. For ffdshow from K-Lite you need to enable it to play MPEG2 video codec. In Start menu KLite Configuration go to the ffdshow video decoder, goto codec find MPEG2 which is disable by default and change it, I recommend the libavcoded

Yes, that sound like the CPU is underpowered. Try disable unnecessary services, especially anything related the Windows Media Centre. If VMC is running I can't play any HD. You shouldn't be having major problems with MPEG2 SD though.

I found the Pandora answer on the PlayOn forums http://www.playon.tv/forum/help/general-technical-issues/pandora-menus#comment-30850 You can't navigate during audio playback because it is a video stream. I expect it will look cleaner when you get mpeg2 working.

Ultimately both your questions are for sub. He probably could provide an elapsed time mechanism similar to LiveTV but I am not sure if he can provide some http navigation for seeking in a the transcoded part of the file.

Is there any way this could be added? What I liked to do with the SageTV client was start it playing, pause it for a while, and then resume playback which would allow me to skip past portions of the already transcoded video that I didn't want to watch. In Universe it seems like I can skip back to replay parts but not forward because (I presume) it shows 0:00 for the duration.

I am not sure how the total time is calculated, and as I wrote in my previous post, this is pretty much up to sub to make changes.
