View Full Version : Problems with mpg video playback

Is anyone else having problems playing back GBPVR .mpg recordings in NPVR?

Some of mine play fine, but a large percentage of those I've tried don't... (they all play fine with 1.4.7, GraphEdit and GSpot and also on the MVP) - NPVR seems to have problems building the graph...

I've tried different decoders with no effect.

Logs shows playing a good file followed by a bad one - both for NPVR and 1.4.7

How are you creating those files? The pvrx2 native log is reporting a wacky resolution

2010-07-07 23:14:35.628 VERBOSE video resolution is 1024 x 576

By rights that file should not play on the MVP Perhaps upload a 20-50MB sample would help?

MartinBoth files are UK DVB-T recordings using the Cyberlink mux then trimmed with MPEGStreamClip. I don't understand the problem with 1024x576 though - isn't that 16x9?

I've never had problems playing this sort of file on the MVP/NMT or the laptop with 1.4.7 - they also play fine on the MVP/NMT with NPVR - my problem is that some of them don't play on the laptop with NPVR.

I can let you have a sample if you like though...

Maximum MP@ML (DVD & MVP) for PAL is 720x576 15Mbs, which is 30% more bandwidth than the MVP can handle FWIW. The aspect ratio flag is what sets 16:9

If you upload a sample to megaupload I'd be happy to look.

Do you want a sample of the file which plays with NPVR or the one which doesn't?

One that doesn't work 20 MB is fine with SD

Martin, I'm having problems with RapidShare - I need to look at other upload sites - back soon, hopefully...

I gave up on Radidshare long ago, that's why I suggested megaupload. I'm on dropbox too or if you want email me 19MB.

Martin, could you let me see your NPVR.log where it builds the graph for this file?

I see you are using the ffdshow decoders - maybe I should try them - do you know if there is a recommended version?

Also, I'm not quite sure what you meant by this
By rights that file should not play on the MVP since it does play on my MVP here.

I use the ffdshow tryouts I'm not sure what date, probably two months old.

I meant the data PVRx2 was reporting to you was too high for the MVP. Your sample showed the data was actually PAL, although I'm surprised at the low bitrate for a UK file.

I'll try the recommended ffdshow tryouts version then.

I think MPEGStreamClip could be causing a problem - I just trimmed a brand new GBPVR .mpg and the original plays fine in NPVR, but the trimmed version doesn't.

It's just strange that everything else plays it fine...

Well, you can try SAF5, it is based on latest FFDshow builds and all is preconfigured here.

From his sig: http://forums.gbpvr.com/showthread.php?t=40821

First post has links to SAF4 or the SAF5 beta.

I tried FFDshow Tryouts - no joy. Then I tried SAF4 - still no joy.

So then I converted the failing file to .ts and it works fine.

I'm not really convinced now that it is a decoder problem - I'm more concerned about why it's not actually building a graph.

Was there ever a resolution to this problem. I am experiencing it on 2 out of 3 computers. On one of my clients I can play back all gbpvr imported recordings perfectly. On the server and one other client I get a black screen with the OSD showing what should be playing. The Time Bar across the top just diplays a begining and ending of 00:00. I am currently on 1.5.28 with all patches installed.

On my second client that this is not working on, I changed all the setting in NPVR to match the client that is working. Still with same black screen.

The logs do not show much of anything.

Thanks for any help

Maybe you have the same issue as i - http://forums.gbpvr.com//showthread.php?47582-1.5.28-beta-available-%287th-Aug%29&p=385590#post385590

It should be fixed in next nPVR.

It should be fixed in next nPVR.That should only apply to MPEG-1 files, not MPEG-2 recordings from GBPVR.

Yes, that is possible.
Few questrions
-does it work if you open your video file in Graphstudio?
-does it work if you rename *.MPG to *.TS?

Thanks for the response. It doesn't work in Graphstudio with mpg. or ts. It does give me an error that part of the stream is not formatted. it looks like it is using ffwdshow which is not a codec I use. I am trying to uninstall it but I don't see it in add remove programs. I also search my HD and didn't find ffwdshow files.

Just an FYI I have a 4th client that I just upgraded to NPVR and it plays the GBPVR imports fine. So that is 4 machines all XP SP3, 2 PCs that play it fine 2 that do not.

I have not done any editing of the files.I asked because recordings straight out of GBPVR seem to work fine for me - I only have problems with files I have trimmed with MpegStreamClip. It looks like the edit is doing something to corrupt something - NPVR seems much less tolerant of MPEG problems than pvrx2 is.
